  1. And because that snippet of "Show Me How To Die" is the only live recording available, here's a better recording of the band presumably rehearsing backstage before the show. It starts with Marko warning the filmmaker "Keep your mouth shut or we will kill you!" 😁 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgLtsR1WLUs
  2. Ok let's go: Okay, I expect something like 2.67/10 again! 🤣
  3. Mike Jussila, mastering engineer, has updated his master list with the 2021 crop of projects. He only worked on two Nightwish projects last year, namely the remastering of the two virtual concerts. Curiously, these were not commissioned by Nuclear Blast, but an unknown British company named A Lovely Bunch Of Coconuts Ltd, listed as active since 2019 in "event catering activities". This may or may not be related to Staccs (the streaming platform), but in my opinion does note bode well for a DVD release in the near future. 🤔 No remasters of older albums on the list either. What a waste of a year!
  4. NW covered quite a few songs over the years, although now with so much original material they don't perform cover songs quite as often as they used to. This was inspired by a compilation I found on reddit by user GouryellaIV (link here). I'm basically using their table and YouTube links but presenting it a bit differently. Here I chose to separate the cover songs NW actually recorded from the songs they only performed live. Links to YouTube were provided in the original reddit post. 5. A festival date in Hungary this summer has been announced, but no word whether the shows in China are cancelled or what. It's likely not so much about performing in China which should be reasonably safe, more about international travel at this time.
  6. Here's a reactor who appears to know some shit. Peter Barber - GLS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7St_tyR0Kg
  7. A quiz question about Floor's first show had me checking setlist.fm, and it turns out that long before this current (2020-2021) set of shows in the Netherlands Floor did perform a couple of solo shows, in the short period between the demise of After Forever and the birth of ReVamp. These (three?) 2009 shows involved Floor performing acoustic versions of After Forever songs with the Red Limo String Quartet, a Dutch string ensemble still active today and described as "one of the most popular string quartets in pop music". 8. I was curious about mentions on the Internet of "Elvenjig" being a cover and not an original composition. There are claims that the instrumental was originally written by IONA, a folk-rock-prog band with which Troy started collaborating in about 1990 and of which he became an official member in 1995. He left the band in 2009, but the song "Jigs" was released in 2002, at a point where Troy was already being credited for playing uilleann pipes, low whistle, tin whistle, bouzouki, acoustic and electric guitars and vocals with IONA. "Jigs" is a much longer piece of music but one can clearly hear similarities with "Elvenjig" especially from 2:30 to 3:57, after which "Jigs" evolves into a different tune. IONA - Jigs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xELIduockzM "Jigs" was initially released on the IONA album "The River Flows: Anthology Vol. 1" (details here) which suggests that it was composed somewhat earlier. Actually the album liner mentions that "Jigs" was one of a number of popular tracks played during the band concerts in 2000 and 2001. However, "Jigs" itself appears to be an adaptation of an old traditional folk song that Troy rearranged (only Internet talk here, no supporting evidence), so it wouldn't be a case of Nightwish covering the IONA song but rather of reinterpreting the same source material. Anyway, I thought you would enjoy this little exploration of Troy's troubled past! 😁
  9. Thanks, my ego feels a little better! 🤣

    Within Temptation

I rewatched the show over the holidays and I enjoyed it more than the first time, I think I was put off by the distracting visual effects the first time around. But I enjoyed the music and the effort involved. Let's see how many bands go back to create a second virtual show?
  11. Oh wait, I think I deserve one more point! 😈
  12. A lengthy and interesting interview with Troy, talking about everything but the (then) new live album. 😆 Among the highlights, Troy discusses the Openly Secular coming out Tuomas and him made back in 2015, to mixed results among the fandom. You might remember that promoting their atheism garnered support in some ranks but also loud protests from more religious quarters. Nightwish lyrics had long moved past the religious undertones of The Carpenter, but this is probably a fascinating discussion for another thread! Anyway, there's a video for the interview, and the text is available too, and I have provided some interesting quotes. The Greatest Show on Earth – An Interview with Troy Donockley of Nightwish By J Salmeron - 11/01/2017 https://www.metalblast.net/interviews/the-greatest-show-on-earth-troy-donockley-of-nightwish/ I didn’t expect to join the band, but it was that change within the band in that tour [Imaginaerum], and the new direction that the band was taking, that made me realize that my true musical self could flower within the band, as a multi-instrumentalist, not just as a guy who plays pipes and whistles. We intend to do a lot more; it has been a wonderful thing for Emppu and me to bring two electric guitars into the band, so that opens up lots of possibilities for some of the older materials with twin guitars and the guitars harmonies. There are changes going in Nightwish, and I’m definitely part of those changes. We all introduce each other to different types of music. I was introduced to symphonic metal by Nightwish; I had never heard of them before I went to their session in London. I had heard of them through Pip Williams, the guy who does the orchestrations, since he sent me a copy of Once, wanting me to check them out because he thought I might like them since I’m into progressive rock. [...] Jukka, Tuomas and I, [were] sitting in a hotel room in New Zealand, with a bottle of fine shiraz wine, talking about the book The Magic of Reality, by Richard Dawkins (as well as The God Delusion and The Selfish Gene). We watched a couple of his lectures, and I stupidly, after we had drank a few glasses of wine and said that it would be wonderful to have him in the new album, decided to promise that I would find him and get him. Of course, I woke up the next morning wondering “what have I done?! What have I said!?” When it came to the controversial aspects of that, with the recording of Richard Dawkins, we didn’t expect to get such venom from some quarters. Some people were like they were going to burn all of their albums! We’ve had lots of frustrated Christians coming out and saying that the album has helped them to come out and shake that stuff off, thanking us for bringing it to them. Also, in that Openly Secular video, nowhere in there do we bash god explicitly. It’s about accepting the world as it is, instead of using supernatural. If what we had was [Richard Dawkins] saying beautiful, universal things, statements of universal beauty and love, you couldn’t criticize them. It wasn’t explicit atheism; it was humanism, universalism. And that’s what comes out, for me, from facing the world and life as they really are. But, don’t forget, me and Tuomas are huge Christmas fans. We love to sing Christmas hymns, we love to sing about baby Jesus, we love all that. We love the whole yuletide experience. Just because you don’t believe in supernatural beings doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy culture, especially an old, ancient ritual. There’s nothing like walking in a church that’s candle-lit, listening to a choir singing. It’s a beautiful, life-enhancing thing. It’s part of our world, and that’s a wonderful thing.
  13. Well I expected as much! 😀 That goes to prove that one doesn't need to be a Nightwish expert to play, we're all doomed to failure from the start! 😉 🤣
  14. Thank you for the kind wishes! 🤘

    Epica

Simone shares some Epica updates for the coming year, including re-releases of early albums. https://www.instagram.com/tv/CYMdE4lojZK/ Now why do I have the feeling that Nightwish is standing still while waiting for the pandemic to pass? Or is it only because they're choosing not to communicate about their projects? 🤔

  17. I almost forgot this is a quiz thread! 😁 Argh this was super hard, I'm bad with remembering dates and especially birthdays! Funny thing, the answers to many of these questions can be found somewhere on the forum, but I just can't remember every little thing that I've posted! 😄
  18. Well it's a pain in the Perse for sure (see I'm using my new vocabulary lol!) but other generations have made bigger sacrifices for us to enjoy the general quality of life we have today. I guess that I'm fortunate enough that I can cope with some restrictions and many people don't have the same resources to deal with this stressful period, so I feel for them. And I'm especially sorry for artists and the whole business that struggle with the restrictions but I don't see many alternatives. We'll be there when this is over to support them, and still are while this is going on. Where is the Nightwish Patreon and where are the remasters and the streaming concerts? Help us help you guys!
  19. Yes we had a curfew for a couple of months last winter, and it was reinstated because things are going South fast. I'm not too fussed about it, because there's nothing to do at night anyway, restaurants and pubs and everything else is closed. 🤔
  20. Happy New Year! 🥳 Curfew has been reinstated effective tonight so it's everyone celebrating from home with the TV and drinks. It's pretty much a repeat of last year!
  21. You guys in Europe are nearly there! Happy 2022, be safe and do stick around, 2022 is bound to be a more exciting year once this wave has washed past us! 🖤
  22. The behind-the-scenes documentary is now available to everyone, along with an explanation about why it is shorter than what was promised. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lnrswq-p03k
  23. Thanks for your hard work for the past 6 months, the quizzes were thoroughly enjoyed (by me at least!) 😁 You're going into the new year soonish, so have a Happy New Year and may 2022 bring you happiness and hopefully a return to a more predictable life! 🙂 I'm going to look at the quiz later today as time allows! 👍
  24. Quality content, this is what this forum is for! 😄👍 I like that you can just assemble a whole train of vitun in order to build up expletive strength, that makes it easy for non-native speakers to get their point across with precision without having to master too many different idioms. 😁 Now I feel prepared for an eventual meet-and-greet with the band, if that happens again one day. I will be able to tell them how fucking great they are! 🤣 Well I might not have all the right words but the most important one will be there! 😁
